What's the best way for 2 computers to share a multifunction printer?

It's a Lexmark multifunction printer, we want to be able to print %26 scan from both computers.

The computers will be about 8 feet from each other, and the printer near one of them.

Home network would be the best way. If you don't like the idea of a home network the next best option would be an automatic printer switch. Its a small hardware device which has some ports for the computers and one for the printer and the box detects the data streaming to the printer and switches as needed. Automatic printer switches use to be (i.e., 5 plus years ago) a little flakey so you could also consider a manual switch. With the manual switch the user flicks the switch and then prints. You will need to install the software that came with the printer in both the computers. then connect the printer to one of the computers (presumably both the computers are on the same network already) and then right click on the printer on the computer where you directly connected it and click on sharing. select share this printer and use the other computer to find that printer... Tip.. you can click start and run and type in \\192.168.0.1 or what ever the IP number is of the computer on which the printer is installed. A window should open which will display all the shared resources.. just right click on the printer and click on connect... that should do
