If both PCs have a Firewire (IEEE 1394) connection you can buy a matching cable. Then designate one of the PCs as gateway (turn on Internet Connection Sharing in Control Panel/Networks).

Special networking USB cables are available but they are not reliable, slow, and expensive. The upside is that almost every PC has a USB connection.

The other option is providing the gateway PC with two networking cards and using a crossover ethernet cable between them. This is very reliable and fast, but expensive.

Your best choice is to just go out and buy a simple router. Not only does this make access very easy and reliable, you also get the benefit of a simple firewall to protect you from internet attacks.

use an ethernet cable
router, get a wireless router and a wireless usb card. Make sure your router will hold more than one port. I personally use the linksys wireless - n router and its the best.
go get a cross over cable. connect them together. make sure its a cross over!!!
Yep...

Just use a crossover cable. They are specifically designed for computer to computer connection.

But keep in mind that you will need two ethernet cards in the computer that is directly connected to the internet and that sharing internet connections over a crossover cable is usually more hassle than it is worth.
Get a router
You can put a wireless card in both computers. If only one computer has internet access then you can share that computer's internet connection. The other computer can access the internet via wireless card to the ''host'' computer that should be left on for this to work.
