Computers are often used in medicine to communicate with implantable medical devices. This can be pacemakers, defibrillators or neurostimulators.

The advantages to this is that changes can be made to the device parameters (the prescription) without the need for more surgery or wires (it's done wirelessely using telemetry).

The disadvantages are that it requires medical and nursing staff to become proficient in using computers. This is an area that they are not traditionally trained in, so it can lead to errors in the programming of the device.

Advantages:

They are able to store uncountable amounts of data. They are accurate only to the extent that they are used by competent staffers. They can be used to link several hospitals together to open the range of expertise to more than one institution.

Disadvantages:

As mentioned before they only work if the user knows what they are doing. Also, they can't show the type of emotion to patients that a human being can.
