You need a crossover cable not a patch cable (which is what most ethernet cables are) if you want to connect them directly without a router or switch.

You need either a crossover cable or, if you already have normal (straight-through) cables you can get a crossover adapter. They're quite nifty little gadgets that come in two types; one goes on one end of a cable and plugs into your computer, the other links two cables together but switches a couple of wire pairs.

Because all computers listen on one pair of wires and transmit on another a crossover cable (or adapter) is required to allow them to transmit to and receive from each other.
If you are not using a hub or a router, you need to get what is called a direct connect cable - these are actually different than the regular RJ45 ''ethernet bables'' although they do look identical. They are also known as a ''crossover'' cable. Call your local computer store to find out if they have one before you go as not everyone carries them anymore. Just as easy, buy an ''ethernet hub'' and just connect both computers to the hub and you will be able to share fiels etc....
You must use cross over LAN cable. You can see this website http://www.mae.ufl.edu/sysinfo/network_c...
