I just bought a rooter, to connect 2 computers in the same house. Only I cannot make the computer ''read'' the rooter, so it doesn't work. Can anyone help me with that?

Ok, obviously you configured your network card to connect to the router (you did enable WEP or WAP Encryption- right?) Just follow along and see what you missed....or may have missed.

1) Did you connect the correct CAT5 wire to the router? You should have a phone line or coax cable going into your modem, a cat 5 (network wire) going from the modem to the WAN port of the router.

2) If you have DSL, most carriers use PPOE. If so, the router (if its not in gateway mode) must be set up using your ISP's Account information. (ie username/password) Usually on the index /first page of the router logon screen, there are settings that need to be configured. You usualyy have a drop down box where you can choose PPOE (or whatever service you have). If you choose PPOE, the username/password boxes should appear/become active.

3) If you are using cable, then most need the MAC address of the PC to be cloned before you can connect. Somewhere in the router, (depending on your model) , there should be a ''CLONE MAC ADDRESS setting. Enter (or hit the clone button if you have it) and apply the settings. The route should be in gateway mode. MAC addresses can be found in the hardware settings of the computer.

The older computer used to be able to, but not anymore. You can change the region of the DVD drive in your computer but only a very limited number of times. Then it's stuck on the last one you selected. If you want to play a region 2 discs regularly, get a second DVD drive for your computer. They're cheap enough so this is an affordable option. Another answer is to get a multi-region DVD player for your TV.

Im not an expert but i have done a geography degree. I would imagine the strength of the shaking is likely to be calculated by how close you are to the epicentre, i.e. the location of the earthquake. The strength of shaking should decrease from this point outwards. Another thing that may be a factor is the type of rock that is underneath the ground. Seismic waves travel at different speeds depending on the substance they are travelling through. For example, a seismic wave will travel much faster through liquid than it will through solid rock and the density of the rocks will also make a difference. I hope this helps.

You want a 2 ghz or better processor, at least 2 gigs of ram, and a moderate level video card such as the g-force 6000 series. Even with these components the computer can only run as well as the servers for WoW allow. My son has custom built his computer to play games like WoW (he's the one who told me those specifications, btw) and he still has the occasional problem with lag and disconnects. We aren't sure if it's Blizzard's servers or our Comcast service when it happens, but it does still happen. (However, the rest of the time his WoW experience is great.)

This is simply because PC1 is having to provide data from the hard drive to PC2 as well as for its own operation. No doubt (regardless of partitions) the data is on the primary hard drive in PC1.

The computer is effectively doing the work for 2 computers and it is perfectly normal to have the system slow down.

You need a crossover cable ( either usb or ethernet its a special cable you cant just use a plain one) Or a Ethernet switch. Then you run network connection wizard on both machines and you can share the folders and space between them

You can get cables to connect them direct, or buy the equipment to set up a wireless network. Neither way will make them run faster; that is controlled by the CPUs you have installed in each computer, but it will give you more access to drive space.

Do you have a Windows 95 or Windows 98 disk? If not, then borrow or download a pirate copy (beware of trojan viruses though) - I know it's not what you are supposed to do but since the laptop certainly has a licensed copy registered to it I don't think it would do Microsoft any harm.

Reset the BIOS and set the boot order to CD first (which key to press to get into BIOS depends on the make of laptop) then install Windows 95 or Windows 98. Hopefully you won't need to format the drive.

The next thing is to obtain the drivers: Search the manufacturer's archive of drivers, they may be difficult to find but they are probably there. Copy the drivers to a disk (floppy or CD) so that you can put them on your laptop after the Operating System has been installed.

That program is a GREAT firewall, and in the firewall settings change every thing to stealth and that should keep you hidden. step 1: goto staples and buy a linksys router with 4 connections.. (just ask the sales person and it should have 4 connectors on the back that look like phone jacks).

Step 2: Buy 3 15 foot ( or simmilar) cat 5 patch cables (also ask the sales person)

Step 3: Go home and connect the modem to the router where it says uplink with a cable.. then one to each computer.

Step 4: Turn off EVERYTHING (modem router and comupters) and then turn on the modem till all its lights that should be on are on... plug in router and waid 20 seconds... turn on computers in whatever order you want.

step 5: Right click on my computer and goto properties. click o n the computer name tab then click on change at the bottom. Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup. If they aren't make them the same.

Step 6: if you had to change the workgroup name restart once more and then they are connected :)

1. A Switch - 4 port

2. Cat 5- Lan cable- 3 cables each 10 m long ( get cable according to the length between your pc's, laptops and printers.

Power on your switch and all your pc's. laptop and printer, connect the Cat 5 cable on the network card of the desktop pc's and the laptop, while the other side of the Cat 5 cable should go into the switch you will see the switch lights switch on.

You do NOT need to pay for 2nd connection. But you do need a router (a device that allows you to connect multiple computers). Connect the router to your DSL modem. Connect the pc's with CAT 5 cabe (network cable) to your pcs. These routers costs about 20/30 dollars or so. Even cheaper if you can get them on sale or with rebates. They have 4 to 8 ports, depending on the model. And you guessed it, you can connect that many computers from one DSL. (you can connect up to 256 computers with daisy-chaning these routers but that is for computer professionals!)

For a normal person, no you will be fine.

Epilepsy is a disorder, you can't trigger it. You can however trigger a seizure. If you have epilepsy or are prone to seizures - then yes a computer screen even without your flashing email can cause a seizure. You don't notice it but your whole screen flashes very very fast... that can cause a seizure if you are epileptic. So can video games, strobe lights, and some flourescent lighting. It isn't a flashing image that causes it, it is the whole screen flashing rapidly that causes it.

If you aren't prone to seizures or have a disorder you will be just fine viewing those kinds of things.

basically i am asking how would i be able to connect 4 computers via Ethernet cables to my linksys 4 port router and instead of having the router connect to a modem, have it connect to some kind of WLAN receiver, therefore providing free internet for all my computer.

This is not possible for a number of reasons.

1. Legality -- whether or not your neighbor knows you are ''borrowing'' his wireless connection, his agreement with his ISP only covers HIS home, not other homes. So either you are stealing from him, or he is stealing from the ISP.

2. Hardware -- as noted above, the router can only route signals it receives from its HARDWIRED input port to the wireless output ports.

3. Topology -- Your neigbor's wireless router is already implementing NAT to allow multiple devices to share the single IP address provided by the ISP. NAT is NOT extensible in this way -- only one NAT hop can be implemented from the single IP address. This is because the NAT works by translating the pseudo-unique internal IP addresses used by the devices inside the router to a single IP address with unique port IDs. If you try to piggy-back a second router onto the first (even using a hardwired connection), the router can get a unique IP / port address, but it can no longer assign unique IP / port address to ITS routed devices.

Its funny how people say dual core is the addition of the 2 cores in the cpu. For example, if a dual core cpu has a clockspeed of 2.8ghz, it is NOT 5.6ghz!!! In reality, they actually dont add up.

A single core running 3 GHz outruns a dual core running 2.4 GHz, IF there is only one thing going on at a time. If there are any parallel operations, the 2.4 GHz is more competitive and may outperform the 3 GHz single CPU system. For example, on my dual core lap-top I have 82 processes and 852 threads active, while running FireFox (and all kinds of background stuff - firewalls, virus scanners, backup software, who knows what all). My system usually runs faster than a single CPU box with a 20% faster CPU, but not always. In particular, my single CPU desktop is prone to freezing for 2 or 3 seconds before responding, the multiple core CPU boxes seem to do that much less often.

2 meg is plenty, even if youre downloading it rarely makes a difference. Download speeds are just upped by isp's to get you to upgrade. Ive been told (sic) that torrent files normally download at between 0.1 and 1 meg so at the moment 2 megs will be fine.
Standard Broadband service is plenty. Don't be fooled into buying the higher priced premium package! I have 5 computers networked onto my single standard broadband connection (Shhhhhhh! don't tell the cable company!) and have no problems with speed. The only thing that ever slows it down is spyware, I have to run it weekly to keep all that crap off my computer! And my kids are always downloading music and videos.
This really depends on how much each of the computers is being used. If both are doing downloads of large files, then the slowdown will be pretty noticable. If on the otherhand, you are talking about normal browsing you will hardly notice the difference.
get broadband from talk talk they give you 8 megs for free. that should sort ya problem out ?
it's good enough if both computers just surfing the web. but if one of them wants to download Video and/or Audio files (often), then go for higher speed. let's put it this way, if you planning to download 2 or more music MP3's a day, get a faster connection.

I just bought a laptop and it doesn't have a floppy drive. I think some of the desktops I saw when shopping still had them.

The ironic part is that you may need a floppy for SATA RAID drivers.

I think it kind of hiccupped. The chipmakers had maxed out the speed they could get from their existing techniques but from what I have been reading, dramatic increases aren't far away. I think there is a kind of balance maintained- roughly- in overall performance, because as soon as the computer gets faster or more capable, there is some new thing to use it up.

The answer is simple, simply have one system (pref the fastest system available) be the virus scanner, then put every computer on the same workgroup, create shares of all drives then map the drives as letter drives on the computer that is the virus scanner, then scan away.
There's no easy way to do that. Going to every single computer and starting a manual scan isn't an option because it's time consuming and you can't be sure if every single computer has an antivirus that's updated with the latest virus definitions. Creating shares isn't a viable option either because, depending on the size of your network, it might take several days before the computer finishes scanning all the shares.

The solution is to adopt a client/server antivirus solution (Symantec is a good choice). All you have to do is install the server and configure it to get the latest updates automatically. But that's an easy task. After that, from the server console you can push the clients to every computer in the network. In other words, the server acts like a remote install server which installs the antiviruis clients on each computer you specify. So let the server do the work for you. After he infrastructure is ready you can go ahead and create groups, update plans, security warnings and so on. besides the obvios advantages (the server will push updates to the clients so on every computer the virus definitions will be up to date) you also have the posibility of remotely starting scans, you'll get notifications when a virus was found on one of the computers and so on.

This is a hickup in your registry system. Sometimes after updating files to the registry basic feature like run and and the Task Manager can disabled. You can open your registry manually to enable the run and task manager or you can simply use a registry cleaner.

I'm not sure if I completely understand your question, but it sounds like want to either overwrite (replace) existing files you save to the file server, if the file on your computer is newer then the one already there. And basically not do anything with files already on the server that are exactly the same (file name, size, and date) as the ones on your computer.

If this is the case, then it should be the permissions of the folder that you're saving to on the server. Keep in mind if you're saving files to a folder inside a folder on the server, then the parent folder will typically be the only folder you can change the permissions on for all files and folders in it.

To change this you'll need to login on the server, you'll need Administrative rights and you'll have to physically be at the server, or logged in using a remote desktop client. Open the folder that contains the folder that you are trying to save files to across the network. Right click on the folder your trying to save to, left click on Properties in the drop down menu. A new window will open, at the top find the Sharing tab, then click on the Permissions button. In order to prevent duplicates of the same files being created you'll have to grant write/overwrite permission to each user independently or to a group. You need to uncheck the option at the bottom that inherent permissions from the parent folder, though this doesn't always work the way it seems like it should.

I wont lie, I don't get much time with Mac's, but on the up side I understand your question now.

On the down side the only thing I can think of is to set up a cron job to get rid of them every once in a while. Since Mac's only create a ._ duplicate file when they modify/create a file. Let me know if this helps any.

I am comparision shopping for a New Notebook does anyone know if Toshiba is a good brand overall and what the heck is the sattelite for in the new computers???? Ok I use to work at BestBuy in computer sales so I know alot about computers and laptops. Our most popular laptop we sold was Toshiba but it all depends on what you are going to do with the lap top. If you are using it for simple use I would go with something like a Gateway but if you are doing pictures and high end software Toshibas are nice also you might want to check with the Sony Vaio's they are also a very good laptop!

I know what I'm doing when it comes to computers, this is really weird though. It'll run fine for maybe 2-15 hours, sometimes a couple days. then for no reason it'll power off (not shutdown). Windows does not recover as if from a crash, and the power button will not turn the computer back on, Must remove power then reaply. Originally thought the PS was bad and resently bought a new one. Any ideas?

Clean out your computer with an ''office duster'' can of compressed air. If the MB or CPU gets too hot it will automatically shut itself down to protect from heat failure. My computer was having a similar problem and a simple cleaning was the solution. Becareful not to touch any components before ''grounding'' yourself to the chassis of the computer because electrostatic discharge (ESD) came damage memory and other components in your PC. Thanks, yes unfortunately sometimes dismantling is nessessary. I've found that you have to really get the heat sink fins of the CPU very clean because that is what was causing me so much grief before Report It

Need help connecting two computers !!?

Here is the catch... my desktop is equipt w/Windows XP, my laptop is equipt w/ Windows 98. I'm trying to play an old version to Age of Empires, and just set up a simple game between the two computers only (no internet). I've tried using a Cat.5 crossover cable, but the computers don't want to read each other. I'm not familiar enough with win98 to change the IP address on the laptop, but this is turning into a bigger headache than it needs to be. Is there a simple solution ???

u cannot upgrade a cpu inside a laptop.
on a desktop, it's as easy as lego's....on a notebook it's a little more complicated, either way you need to know the spec's on your mobo to check for compatibly, that will determine which chips fit on that specific board (check with mfg. for board spec's) then if it will fit, pop the case, remove heat sink and fan, swap the chip, some therm paste, put the heat sink and fan back on = all good.

btw: all these people that say it can't be done are crazy...I've done it on several notebooks, it's not easy and there are lot's of limitations but it is absolutely do-able'!
If you're using a laptop, then the only way you have to go is purchasing a new one unfortunately. Desktops you are able to upgrade the processor (granted your motherboard can support it).
it depends you gotta know if your motherboard is compatible with the processor, i wouldnt recommend switching it, because if you do one thing wrong, it could lead your computer to failing and it probably wont work again, or just contact hp and tell them if you can change the processor to the one you want to switch to, and tell them the model number of the processor, and the type of the processor, they might need that type of information

Gateway computers?

I was just curious how everyone feels about gateway computers? Im going to purchase a new one in the next few days and am between an HP and a Gateway. I'm sort of leaning towards the gateway due to the price/specs. What has been your experience with Gateway?

My new laptop is a Gateway, and it works just fine. Intel pentium dual core, dvd-ready and it has a dvd-labeler on it too. I've also handled an HP before, as my father's laptop is an HP and that works great too. HP laptops have great connectivity (his laptop has a built-in bluetooth device that I'm green with envy about). Both are good in my opinion.

What you should be more concerned about is its warranty. The better the warranty deal, the better. What's good about HP and Gateway is they both offer service warranties that span from 1-2 years. My dad's previous HP crashed on him after a year and a half. He took it to HP, and since it's warranty-covered, they replaced the whole thing.

Also, what's in the laptops? Built-in bluetooth? Wireless connectivity? How many usb cables can you put into it without having to buy a hub?Does it come with a virus scanner already? This all depends on what your lifestyle requires.

I'm not sure if Gateway would do the same for me in regards to replacing the whole thing if it crashes, I sure hope they do, but point of it is, it all depends on the service and what additional stuff it has. Specs like speed and connectivity are all the same. They're both intel. They're both windows. They could both be dual core and have the same speed, so on and so forth. I hated computers until I was nearly 20 because my dad has always been a seriously addicted computer nerd - no joke.

My dad had a computer 10 or 15 years before it became mainstream for most households. He was always on the computer - day %26 night %26 as a child I was constantly being scolded for interrupting him. He never spent time with me, he huffed %26 puffed any time any of us needed him for anything because it interrupted him from his computer. Christmas day to New Years Eve, every holiday, every weekend, and even in the middle of the night he would be on the computer.

The only everyday memories I have of my dad from my childhood %26 teenage years is him sitting at the desk in the corner on the computer while the rest of us ate dinner or went out or celebrated a birthday, etc.

My case is extreme, but computers have replaced emotional connections in a lot of ways. Kids are playing on computers on their summer breaks instead of going outside %26 entertaining themselves like a lot of us had to.

I have remote desktop enabled on both computers. I open the Remote Desktop Connection tool and type in the IP address of the computer. Then I click connect. It comes up with a user name and password dialog and I type in the user name and password. It sits for about 30 seconds and then comes up with:

This computer can't connect to the remote computer.

when i go in to the hub manager all the computers are there but when i try to access the computers via the network my computer just doesn't seem to be able to see or access the XP computer via the network. Both computers have the same network name but don't seem to be able to locate each other. The computer i'm using is vista. I've turned off all the firewalls to see if its that and to no avail. Does any one know if i need to add the computers in application sharing via the home hub manager and if so as what?

Hi, I had exactly the same problem but when i typed the address direct in to the vista address bar it was there. (ie \\maincomputer\my docs) Don't know why it never appeared on the network but it all works fine.
Just run network wizard from 'my network places' on xp and whatever it is called on Vista.

In my opinion, the Netflix model, without the mail, and without physical DVDs, is the coming thing. Hi -

This is easy. There's no need to download extra programs for this -- you can simply encrypt the files in question so that only your computer can open them.

I assume you're running Windows. If this is the case, then go into My Documents or My Computer and find the folder that contains the files in question (it could even be the entire My Documents folder if you wanted).

Right-click the folder you want to ''lock'' and in the pop-up menu choose Properties. On the ''General'' tab, near the bottom (next to ''read-only'' and ''hidden'' you'll se a button that says ''Advanced'' -- hit it). Now check the box that says ''encrypt contents to secure data.'' Click OK, then Apply. The files that are encrypted will now appear in green type and can only be opened by your computer unless you ''decrypt'' them.

A few years ago in high school they started a experimental computer teaching method using my class as guine pigs. There were some pros and some cons to it. You could go through it way faster then an actual teacher would be able to teach it, plus if you were stuck you werent left behind. However, you couldnt ask a computer a question if you didnt know what was going on. That last part was the reason I failed the first semester and switched out to a traditional teacher. While it wasnt meant for me, maybe itll be better for you
