I cant connect my computers... I have a dell inspiron 1521 laptop using windows vista home premium, im trying to connect it to my desktop a northgate running win xp sp2 i have a cat5 cable and I know it can be done but I need step by step instructions. I want to transfer and access files back and forth. Please dont give me links to broad solutions Im looking for a specific solution and I know this community can help

create a shared folder on both machines where the files are you want to share between computers right click or the file or drive then click sharing then click share within network not outside of network

Check that your cat5 cable is the right one to connect 2 pcs directly. Normally,cat5 cables are crossed-cables, meaning that they wont work connecting them directly to the pcs.



Create a shared folder on both computers. In that folder, both computers can see what's there.



Vista sometimes don't work when it comes for doing small networks. Try turnnig off the firewall from the advanced settings in the Firewall Properties.
